Back up cameras are for those who don’t know how to use their mirrors.

They’re quite useful even if you do

Like the time when my mom went to pick her new car with back up camera and almost backed it into a bollard, since then I actually like back up cameras, they let you see the little stuff behind you.

I know, I'm just being an old fart.

In a car from 1997, I agree. Unfortunately, most cars today look like they should be parked on the tops of hills in Normandy with German machine guns poking out the windows.

My brother once opined that cars today come with gun slits and not windows, as you suggest. I drove a new Odyssey last week, the one with the side view camera. I found it to be a distraction. That said, the rear deck on our 2013 Civic is so high that backing into the driveway can be a challenge. As I replied to somebody else, I’m just being an cranky old fart.

We have disabled every “safety” feature on the Odyssey, starting with that side camera (which most Honda models have now). Forward collision just went off for no reason, and way too late to react in the case of a real threat. Lane departure warning? Useless. Now where is the onion that was on my belt?

I got the Oddy as a loaner, and it took me a while to figure out what that beeping was (front collision warning). I’m convinced that all the safety features are intended to allow people to text and drive more safely. And to operate that ridiculous infotainment touch screen.

It’s a distraction even when it doesn't want to be. For example, when my wife (in the passenger seat) is changing stations, I instinctively look over at the screen to see what's playing. This isn't so much Honda's fault, it's more of a commentary on being overloaded with information from XM and others. I miss getting back into my midsize car and knowing where all the controls are by feel. You can never, ever do that with touchscreens by their very nature.

My car is long, wide, and hard to see out of. I also hate back in parking, but can do it if I need to now

I am a diehard back-in parker. My kids always ask me why I do it, and I tell them that it’s easier to pull straight out, and safer, too. It's also easier to get into tight spaces when the trailing wheels are doing the turning.

Which is why touchscreens have no place in cars. They require too much attention.

My car has rear cross traffic alert, so when backing out it beeps if a car is approaching from either side.

That’s my wife’s job. And she does it very well.
